Tips on How to Have Healthy Hair

When we talk about aging and the problems that come with it, one of the things we may not mention as often (but certainly experience) is the thinning, or greying of hair. Hair can start to look dried out and tired on different people at different times in life; some people find their first grey hair even in their 20’s! We notice that a lot of problems, in regards to hair, are very similar to the reasons we see rapid aging signs in the rest of the body. Not to fear! There are multiple effective and easy ways to keep hair healthy and young!

1. Don’t Over-Brush Your Hair

When I was still in my twenties, a friend of mine suggested this idea she had heard about making sure your hair goes through a hundred brush strokes before bed. Turns out, this wasn’t the world’s greatest advice because over-brushing your hair actually just stresses it out further rather than the opposite. You can cause damage to the outer layers of your hair by brushing too often and eventually this will lead to split-ends. If you have treated hair, dyed or otherwise, you can actually cause even more damage.

Of course, brushing the hair regularly is still something that is necessary, experts recommend limiting the comb to twice daily! Brushing the scalp allows for blood to flow to hair follicles and lead to hair growth. A higher quality hair-brush also leads to a higher quality brush stroke!

2. Try Biotin Supplements, or Vitamin H

Biotin is an essential vitamin (also known as Vitamin H) that converts nutrients to energy. It works, specifically, towards the health and growth of nails, hair and skin. Generally, you can find many sources of biotin in your regular diet, eating foods such as avocados and nuts. There are a number of other ways to supplement biotin if you are not getting enough, or just for added benefit! Biotin improves a protein called keratin, that makes up your skin, nails and hair.

Biotin is also known to help lower blood sugar in those with diabetes, and increase good cholesterol while reducing bad cholesterol! This is a great and easy way to make your hair healthy.

3. Eat Healthier

There are so many great foods to eat for hair growth and hair health altogether! As you grow older, there are a lot of reasons to start watching what you eat. Excess unhealthy foods can lead to weight gain, hair loss (if you aren’t getting sufficient nutrients), and an overall tired look.

Berries, avocados, nuts, eggs, spinach, and beans are just a few of the healthy, protein-rich foods to help your hair health! Shrimp are also a good source of protein, iron and vitamin D and B vitamins, which can aid hair growth. These are all great foods to eat to look younger! Hair loss is often attributed to iron deficiencies, and spinach is a great source; it also helps clear the skin!

4. Try A Hair Mask, Hair Oil, or Both

A hair mask is basically like a deep-cleanser for your hair. It can add strength, shine and make your hair healthier! Different hair masks can be aimed for different purposes in your hair, such as hydrating, moisturizing, strengthening and more. All of these things are great and can lead to a more youthful, voluminous head of hair. We also want something that is beneficial to the hair in every way, so aim for healthier ingredients.

The best hair masks are made with lots of natural ingredients like aloe vera, keratin, caffeine and also biotin! These are the kinds of masks we want for a healthy and young look. Different oils, such as jojoba oil, almond oil, olive oil and coconut oil are also great for your hair. Essentially, the right oil can be a hair mask in itself. Argan oil has repairing qualities that work towards fixing damaged hair. Hair masks can be applied to your hair weekly, and depending on the instructions with the specific mask, you only need to leave it in between 10 and 30 minutes.

Our top pick is the L’Oreal Professional Absolute Repair Lipidium Mask as it targets damaged hair and leaves it stronger, smoother and softer. Best used as an occasional replacement for your conditioner, only requires 3-5 minutes of your time!

For blonde hair, we prefer L’Oreal Professional Blondifier Masque for its ability to restore and maintain the radiance of blonde hair. Infused with Acai Berry Polyphenol which prevents oxidation, this is a sustaining hair mask that effectively leaves hair smooth and shiny after just one use!

5. Just Like Skincare, Have a Routine for You Hair

Simple as that; try to keep up with a routine for your hair to keep it healthy and strong. If you want to know how to look younger than your age, have a regimen.

Unlike daily facial cleansers, however, it is important to remember that your hair does not require a daily wash to be healthier or better-looking. In fact, it is best to space out washes, once in three days, in order to retain the hair’s natural, healthy oils while stripping it only of excess dirt. Hair is made stronger this way.

6. Let Yourself Be

Embrace some of the natural aspects of life, such as the texture of your hair, and skip the hair straightening or the blow-dry. Constant heat and chemical product in your hair only works to add further stress to it, and you’ll notice that if you leave your hair in its natural element more often it will get used to it (and so will you).

There are certain times here at Anti-Aging Solutions when we consider it best to go back to the basics, and this is one of those times. We love your natural hair, and there is a lot you can do to enhance it’s look without damaging it!

  1. I hope that that serum is not only for the ladies because I was thinking maybe I too should give it a try. This is a very good post I must say and I liked your tips. I have been having so much problems with my hair lately. First I had a drastic hair loss last year and now its all just not cool so I wear a cap most of the time now. Lol. I will definitely try out your tips and most especially take to eating healthy. Thank you!

  2. I always heard that whatever we consume has a direct influence on our health and that concerns our hair too. My hair is going through a very rough period right now because I suffer from dandruff and hair loss and it has really been tiring. Thankfully I am reading this post right now. I also heard that shampooing is very bad for the hair too when used excessively. Thanks so much for the tips and I’d try to keep them to heart

  3. Having healthy hair is one of the things anyone would want to have to always look good, but sadly, some activities done to/with the hair would always affect the healthy nature of our hair. Adding some conditioners that have the presence of some chemicals that could make her hair lose color should be avoided, and washing should be encouraged.
Now looking at the ways you have given to have healthy hair, I must confess I am really impressed and have learned some things from it. I have always doubted the usefulness of nuts to the hair but now those doubts are cleared. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Having problem with the hair is what most people complain of nowadays. Hair breakage, hair loss, dried hair, grey hair at early stages and all these varies in different people. This article is really informative and Educating as well useful. I love the tips you suggested , they are practical things anyone can do but the last one which “let yourself be” is the one I like most. I’ll share this post with my girlfriend and I’m sure she will like it.

The anti aging solution hair product that you recommended, please kindly drop a purchase link where we can buy this product. Thanks for sharing this post, I love it.

    1. Thanks for dropping by! I’m so glad you found some useful information here! The hair care set I mentioned is the one I actually use personally. It’s a professional set that comes with nourishing shampoo, conditioner, a hydrating hair mask and hair serum oil! Women and men can both use the products and I honestly found that using them regularly in a routine I noticed my hair become stronger over time. My hair used to fall out easily, and now it actually feels and looks so much healthier. It’s called Aqua Mineral’s Hair Care Set, (I believe it’s about 60% off right now for the whole set, so that’s pretty nice).

  5. Hair is our crowning glory that’s why we need to take care of it. Thank you for your hair tips especially about the food we need to include in our menu. I wasn’t aware it’s the Vitamin H plays a big role to make our hair healthier. Good thing I love avocado and nuts. Hair masks make my hair manageable and it smoothens my thick strands so I often use it twice or thrice a week depending on the weather condition. Since I’m living in a tropical country, the weather is always hot so I can’t get away from shampooing my hair everyday because I can feel all the dirt accumulated from sweat and pollution. I didn’t know it’s gonna make my hair dry til I read your blog. Thank you for covering this topic. I will make it a habit to do your tips so I can avoid hair problems.

  6. Indeed beautiful and shiny hair always leaves good impression, which is why proper hair care is important, and I’m so lucky enough to have this health care tip which is an important part in having healthy hair and helps avoid extensive damage that can lead to hairloss. I’m also happy you made me understand serums can be used for men. Great information.

  7. I really like how simple tips can change the results you get and the combination of all the tips you gave will give awesome results. The first time I was able to keep a hair care routine for 2 months I saw a tremendous evolution. But I also saw a great amount of growth when I let it rest for a while. So, I think it is a matter of finding the routine that works well and above all have that routine, do not neglect your hair.

  8. Awesome post! I suffered thinning hair for so many years. I have used different stuffs ever, and the sad truth is nothing worked and I already accepted my fate. I began taking Biotin supplements about 6 months ago. For the first month, I felt my hair was thickening, but only slightly. I kept using it, and their has being a major improvement. Biotin supplement works well.

  9. I love your posts  my wife has had until now great hair. But as she has gotten older it seems her hair has gotten shorter and thinner. She is now thinking of getting extensions. But I think your suggestions will help her greatly.

I will definitely get her to try the hair mask and oil. So thanks for the tips. Keep posting this is good info.

  10. My hair’s all shabby and shaggy at the moment. I think I’d like to give the hair mask a go.  I’ve never applied one before so I’m really curious to see how it works.

How long does it ship to Australia?

I normally apply an Argan oil after showering but do you think I should NOT do this after applying the mask, just to see how it works out?  Or is it safe enough to continue as normal?

    Thanks for the advice.

  11. I’ve read somewhere that if you over brush and then pull your hair into a very tight pony tail, it can actually make your hair fall out.

I’m already eating lots of avocado and nuts as well as spinach and eggs so I guess I’m sorted with the vitamins and biotin! I might just have to add some shrimp, which I don’t mind at all.

I’m always looking to try out different masks and oils, so I’ll try out the ones you suggested.

I’ve noticed that when I’m sick my hair doesn’t look as nice, which I’m guessing might have to do with not getting enough of something then. Thank you for this post.

  12. Hi Sonia,

It is great to read that some of the things that I have found to work for my hair, puts me on the right track!

I really like the Argan oil, because it definitely moisturizes the hair without making it greasy. I have very dry hair, so I only wash once a week, to give time for the natural oils to make it more manageable again!

I have forgotten that brushing the scalp helps with blood circulation, I will try getting into the habit again 🙂
