As a woman, and to be honest even as a young girl, I always thought that men seemed to be genetically blessed to age more gracefully more easily than women could. Watching movies growing up, and even with kids I knew when I was younger, I remember thinking “that guy is going to look good at 40”. It might be a personal thing, but I have actually to be a common thought between many people that I have known: girls and women don’t look for a man who look younger, but who looks like he has aged well.
Now, it should be acknowledged that both men and women should aim to look their best at whatever their age is, and “anti-aging” is really about that rather than trying to turn back time. Character is important, and it can only come with age, so whether you’re a man or woman it’s important to recognize your age is also representative of good things, like experience and wisdom that comes only with time.
That being said, becoming wiser doesn’t mean you should have to sacrifice youthful energy or looking good overall. Having known my husband since we were 20 and 22, I have seen him take care of his body with great ease, and somehow he looks better than he did at 22. Here are simple and easy tips that men can use in daily life that can help you age gracefully and not sacrifice a thing!
Maintain Proper Hair-Care
As you get older, it is important to take care of your hair. It is nest to start doing so as soon as possible, because it is generally true that hair begins to thin over time. For thinning hair it is a good idea to try hair oils that naturally make your hair stronger.
Using the right shampoos and making sure to use hair oil can be crucial to good hair-health. Here are a few things to remember when it comes to hair care.
- Shampoos that are formulated with harsh ingredients can strip away natural oils which protect and hydrate your hair; cheaper shampoos often have these harsh chemicals in them. Try using a gentle formula that is sulfate-free and has natural ingredients instead.
- Don’t forget to condition your hair as well! It may not seem important at the time, but conditioning your hair is just as important as washing it because conditioners replenish moisture and essential oils that even sulfate-free shampoos can get rid of.
- When attempting to cover up any grays, choose a color close to your natural shade, because too different a shade can accentuate age.
- If you have curly or course hair you should make sure your hair is getting a decent amount of moisture. Try using a leave-in conditioner; this will ensure that coarse and curly hair stays hydrated and healthy! Use oils or try a deep conditioner for course and curly hair.
- Regular haircuts are really important, and it’s not just about shaping your hair and face. It helps your hair grow healthy as well. Hairdressers agree that it helps when you bring a photo along when describing the kind of haircut you like. Adding texture to a haircut will make it easier to style, and also help it look nicer as it grows out.
Shape Your Beard
Or your clean shave. Either way, take care of your jawline. Usually, a closely shaved man looks younger than a guy with a beard and mustache. That being said, as long as you keep the area well-groomed, every man looks different and different looks suit different people.
If you do maintain a beard, keeping your beard soft is crucial to keeping it healthy and to not wanting to shave it all off.
Keep your beard from becoming unruly by brushing daily using a beard brush. If you have grey facial hair and decide to cover up, use a dye that’s made for men’s facial hair, not head hair. Choose a soft colour, something too dark or too solid can come off fake.
Use a beard conditioner or balm to avoid a dry or scratchy beard from forming. A good conditioner can moisturize your beard in a healthy way, and make it comfortable and easy to have a beard that looks and feels good. A conditioner has the extra benefit or acting as a styling-gel if you like it to!
Along with being hypoallergenic and a soft balm, it also does well to shape and hydrate your beard all the while helping it grow. Here are a few more plus points:
- Destroys dead skin allowing cleaning and enhancement of damaged skin
- Stimulates microcirculation in the facial follicle
- Regulates the secretion of the sebaceous glands by moisturizing and nourishing the beard, which grows thicker and brighter
- Increases beard volume
- Rejuvenates beard roots
Care For Your Skin and Face
I’ll be honest, I used to make fun of my partner for applying moisturizer as often as I did. I realize that may make me sound a little sexist, but honestly in the beginning I really thought that lip balm, collagen products and moisturizer were things that men didn’t have to worry about it. But it was early on that I noticed the difference between the men who didn’t use these products and the one (who I knew) that did!
To prevent your skin from adding years to your looks, wear sunscreen, moisturizer, and lip balm regularly. Retinoids can help you slough off old skin cells and can be found in various over-the-counter products. If you need a stronger product, you can obtain certain creams by prescription from a dermatologist. Retinoids also aid collagen production and prevent it from breaking down over time.
It’s also very important to cleanse daily. Each time you wash your face, you’re removing dirt, grime, and excess oils that have seeped into your pores. Cleansing, ideally twice each day, will prevent clogged pores, breakouts, and will minimize shininess.
Keep Up Healthy Habits
If you want to look good on the outside, it is just as important to take care of your insides. It’s necessary, more and more so as you age, that you get good exercise and have a healthy diet. The benefits of both these things are countless; you will have more energy, be able to maintain a healthy weight, feel better about yourself in general, and help you live longer (if you’re into that kind of thing).
Of course, if switching to healthy diet were just that simple then everyone would have done it already. So yes, life changes like healthy eating and actively exercising on a regular basis, require you to make a real effort each day. Ease into daily exercise by starting out with a short workout session weekly. Up it to two times a week, then three.
The good news is, after you have made the habit, it becomes far less of a chore and simply becomes another plus side in your life.
Dress For Success
When it comes to the clothes you wear, it matters that dress to look your best, not your youngest. How you dress and your general appearance make a heavy impact on what people think of you, but more importantly, they can impact your own self-view and self-confidence. Having quality clothing can really effect how you look and feel If it’s affordable, it’s a good idea to have your clothes tailored for a perfect fit! When you dress well, you are also dressing for your age. Sober shades are OK as well as colours; when it comes to clothes it is more important to dress well rather than trying to make yourself look younger than you are. What you want to do it dress to look successful without aging yourself; mature without becoming old.
Ideally, have a wardrobe that includes some variety. A good suit is a crucial component to a classy wardrobe, but don’t forget to include some variety. All black and blue suits can start to become a little boring. Spice things up with a grey suit and pink tie; this combo is classy, adds some colour, and it’s not “out there”. Suiting up for an important meeting or presentation makes a person feel more confident and instantly makes puts a person in a more productive mindset. The best part is that investing in good quality clothing pays for itself because quality requires less replacement: good clothes last longer. Dressing your best changes people’s perception of you; when you seem like a professional because of the way you look, people perceive of you that way.
In turn, the success you project makes you feel more confident as well. How you dress matters, but you don’t want to act like you’re 20 years younger than your age. This actually has the reverse effect of what we’re going for.
All in all, there are a number of simple things you can do to keep you looking your best. Eating healthier, cleansing and moisturizing regularly, and keeping to good grooming are great ways to stay healthy and young. It’s best to ease into a routine and then keep to it!
